Pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the posterior of the left atrium; they lie below and anterior to the pulmonary artery. Two of the pulmonary veins open on its left side and two on the right; either or both pairs may unite before their entrance, the left pair doing so more frequently than the right.
